Bilingual Education: A Critical Issue Facing our Schools

By: Kristin Rudnick and Kevin Broadwell

Why is Bilingual Education a "hot button?"

- There is a large and continuously growing immigrant population in the U.S.

o How do we service these immigrant children to make sure they are getting the best education possible?

o How can we best position them for success?

- Bilingual Education are the various options available in which schools can help English Language Learners (ELLs).

This web page will explore the the historical/legal perspective and pedagogical perspective of bilingual education and how it is an issue facing schools today. To go into more detail, Proposition 227 will be debated as to whether or not this was the right choice for ELL students. Also as a continuation of the Proposition 227 debate, the issue of whether or not bilingual programs should be eliminated all together will also be debated.

Purpose: To present bilingual education from multiple perspectives so an informed decision can be made as to whether or not bilingual education is beneficial/necessary or not.
